Sierra María-Los Vélez, sheltered by the land.

Just 90 minutes from the capital of Almeria is the northernmost Natural Park in the province of Almeria, its spectacular beauty, which wisely combines rugged terrain, lush forests and snowy peaks, breaks with the typical aridity of the landscape of the area.

The natural wealth of Sierra María-Los Vélez is the perfect culmination to the cultural treasure of the Velez region, owner of an incalculable artistic and documentary heritage, with prehistoric sites as important as the Cueva de los Letreros or the Cueva de Ambrosio (declared World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO).

This Natural Park extends through the municipalities of María, Chirivel, Vélez Blanco and Vélez Rubio, although there are still some farmhouses such as Casablanca and Alfaguara, the population is concentrated in the surrounding urban centers.

The traveler accessing the Levante through the vast Pasillo de Chirivel can not imagine all the scenic diversity of the natural park Sierra Maria-Los Velez, which raises its rocky outcrops to one of the clearest skies of Andalusia.

In María-Los Vélez we find large and abrupt massifs, almost vertical cliffs that reach over two thousand meters high in mountain ranges such as María, Las Muelas, El Maimón, El Gabar or Sierra Larga, formed by limestone materials, only erodible by the water that penetrates its entrails, hide in its belly a large natural reservoir that shapes caves and chasms, Cueva de La Gitana, Sima de los Rincones- and offers magnificent springs such as Los Molinos, in Vélez Blanco. Come and visit it, it will surprise you and you will enjoy it.
