The Alpujarra Springs Route

Laujar de Andarax, a walk through the Almerian town that has 16 fountains.

Its 16 fountains are considered a symbol of this town, and it is not for less, since this town, capital of the Alpujarra Almeriense has a great number of them.

Its origin dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries as improvements to create a public hygienic supply.

 

It all began as a measure to prevent the population from collecting water from the irrigation ditches, in addition to creating representative urban spaces.

Some of its 16 sourcesThe history of the company is several centuries old, and it also has great mulsuman heritage and this area is very prosperous thanks to its proximity to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, making the water in one of the main elements of this locality.

Being represented through different urban spaces, from which different historical periods, designs, typologies, epochs and society can be glimpsed.

A short tour through them

A great example of one of the oldest in the town, is the Pilar de la Plazawhich was built in the year 1684. Which represents among its forms one of the most representative signs of this town and the province of Almería: a sailing ship with a crow, considered as an attribute of St. Vincent, patron saint of Laujar de Andarax.

We also have an example of a baroque fountain, which is made up of a black marble pillar and a noble coat of arms. El Pilar de la Cañadawhich is the coat of arms of one of the most powerful families of Laujar de Andarax, Marquises of Iniza.

Another one of them, which also has a curious name, is The Pilar Seco or Calvache PillarThe legend says that it never stopped emanating water, it was built in the year 1688.

We could not leave behind the oldest one in the municipality, the Pilar de San Blaswhich also has a trough, stands out above all for its pagan appearance.

And last but not least, the Pilar de Nacimiento which is located in a recreational area where the Andarax River is born.

Apart from its fountains, Laujar de Andarax has impressive views, monuments and different hiking trails.
