The irrigators of Mecina Bombarón (Alpujarra de la Sierra) received last week the recognition that the Unesco has made the ancestral irrigation ditches of careothe traditional water management system that is used throughout the Sierra Nevada, as '...'.Hydrology Demonstration Site'.
The careo is the system of Muslim origin by which the farmers "entertain the water" in the summits of Sierra Nevada. By means of a system of irrigation ditches, guide the melt water (when the heat starts, around March-April) to the chasmsThe water infiltrates into the abundant aquifers and later appears in the rivers and springs in midsummer, when it is most needed for irrigation.
Several research teams from the Geological and Mining Institute of Spainwhich is part of the Superior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC)of the University of Granada (MEMOLab)and of the University of AlmeriaThe Unesco chair that granted the award indicates that the Mecina river basin, where this ancestral irrigation and responsible water management system is beneficial for human beings and the ecosystem, has been researching for two years.
