An international recognition of the natural and cultural wealth of the province.
The province of Almeria is about to take an important step towards the conservation of its environment and cultural heritage, thanks to UNESCO, which has announced the expansion of the Sierra Nevada Biosphere Reserve. Expected to be completed in June 2025, it will increase the protected area by 87%, incorporating an additional 150,000 hectares.
International recognition for a natural treasure
The designation as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO implies a great international recognition of the ecological importance, biodiversity and cultural value. This initiative means that 23 towns in Almeria will become part of the Biosphere Reserve, they are: Bayárcal, Paterna del Río, Laujar de Andarax, Fondón, Beires, Almócita, Ohanes, Padules, Canjáyar, Alsodux, Rágol, Instinción, Bentarique, Terque, Íllar, Alhabia, Santa Cruz de Marchena, Alboloduy, Nacimiento, Las Tres Villas, Abla, Abrucena and Fiñana..
